Jean Pouyat Limoges Cobalt and Gilt Bowl

Overview A refined Jean Pouyat Limoges porcelain bowl, decorated in a deep cobalt ground with elaborate gilt ornamentation. The effect is one of depth, contrast, and controlled opulence. Highlights • Marked J.P.L. Limoges France • Cobalt ground with extensive gilt decoration • Layered border with detailed gold pattern work • Classical Limoges cabinet-scale form • Strong visual contrast between cobalt and white well Why You Will Love It This piece delivers immediate visual impact. The saturated cobalt creates a dramatic field for the gold decoration, while the restrained central well prevents the composition from becoming overly heavy. It is a classic example of Limoges refinement—elegant, controlled, and highly decorative without excess. Dating / Background Jean Pouyat was one of the important Limoges porcelain manufacturers active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pieces marked “J.P.L. France” were produced for export following the 1890 tariff regulations requiring country-of-origin marking. The style of decoration and mark place this example in the circa 1890–1910 period, when Limoges porcelain was widely exported and highly regarded for its quality and finish. Condition Very good condition with gilding wear around the cavetto, consistent with age and use. The cobalt ground remains strong and even, and the overall presentation is excellent. Dimensions (inches) Height: 1.5 Width: 6 Depth: 6 Weight: 0.4 lbs Why Collect Limoges porcelain from this period represents a high point of French ceramic production, combining technical precision with decorative sophistication.
